Cataloging

The DHC has put together a group of cataloging guidelines and processing procedures to assist librarians and archivists in providing online cataloged access to dance research materials.

The cataloging guidelines are based on the Anglo American Cataloging Rules and also provide information about coding records using the Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) format. The cataloging guidelines are divided into four sections:

The Processing Procedures Manual for Dance and other Performing Arts Collections provides detailed instructions in arranging, re-housing, and describing an archival collection. It is designed to facilitate the processing of special collections and archives by addressing both theory and practice, including how to arrange, preserve, and describe archival materials. Standard archival practices are prescribed, but some specialized procedures have been recommended to address the more particular concerns of performing arts-related collections.

The guidelines and processing procedures are currently under revision by members of the library and archival community and the DHC expects that they will be available on this website in Spring 2004.
